Culture Similarities ๐Ÿ˜Š, let's vote or comment

Hi folks,

A bit of reminiscing for me today.

I spent a good part of my younger adult days schooling in Zaria, Northern Nigeria.

Even then, I was intrigued by the different types of lovely fresh grains to be found there. The fat tubers of #yam (๐Ÿ˜‰) and fresh tomatoes etc amazed me as well how available they were, for a very reasonable price.

The average Northerner tends to live simply and without much fuss and so 'then' food was quite cheap too. Altogether, it was 'discovery channel' for me.


One of my 'discoveries' was Kunun gyada made from peanuts and rice,


especially as it reminded me of Rice pudding, which is an English favourite.


Then I recently heard of a Caribbean peanut porridge recipe. ๐Ÿ˜€

I say, the world definitely goes round in a circle as far as some traditions go.

Well, whichever you choose, they are nice warming meals, just right for breakfast or a cold night in. (Winter is coming too ๐Ÿ˜“...❄⛄)

Woolwich Carnival 2017!!!

I love what I do right now; which is helping to bring 'the best' of our African and Caribbean food to the attention of indigenes and non indigenes alike.
Why? I say because our food is indeed 'good' and wholesome and a lot remains to be discovered about it by many.

Well, in a bid to do just this, I hopped into my car and headed to Woolwich  town centre in The Royal Borough of Greenwich on Saturday the 23rd where it's annual Carnival was taking place.

Woolwich has proven to be a very welcoming community to a diverse number of ethnicities and this fact was openly celebrated by all on the day. I went there to see, at least food-wise, how we were represented.

Imagine having freshly baked pizza



and a cold sorbet icecream from the insides of such a gorgeous car.

Now, that is ingenuity that pulls crowds, apart from the food being lovely too.
 Imagine having that at your wedding garden party ๐Ÿ˜ƒ ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Some folks when asked if they ever went out to eat food from some particular African or Caribbean countries; the common thread was, 'I don't know where to go to enjoy such a meal'.

So my good people, owners of 'the good food businesses', let's join forces to see that our food gets an image boost and is that little bit more accessible.

Plantain puff puff

Good day folks! Hope I meet you well.

There's so much to see, say and do in the afrocaribbean food world but I thought to bring you what seems to be trending in my world; 'plantain puff puff'.

My blogger friend Zita Bernice Tiena made hers, and my friend Ronke Edoho of 9jafoodie.com made her version too.
I also learnt that the Congolese have a banana version called 'mikate'.

It is so easy and versatile to make, that out of no time I made mine. My friend Tinah made hers within an hour of sharing the post on Facebook-  see it here.

 You can make it spicy or sweet or eat it with a sweet 'spread' or a spicy dip.

For me, I used gluten free flour and powdered oats. Think of all the plantain that you can store in your freezer and put to good use when ready. ๐Ÿ˜

Give either recipe a go, your children will definitely be happier for your experiments.
As for me, I have won over my tribe here ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ˜Š.

Everyday gists .. Cassava leaf soup with Melrose



I go my sista house as na im husband birthday. Dem come give me rice with chicken, stew and cassava leaf soup.

I carry am go work for lunch yesterday. See me, I come dey follow the nooks and crannies of chicken bone when remain to find this soup lick and I dey office! ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ˜ฎ! Yes o! It was that tasty.


Sister Melrose, my S'alone  (Sierra Leonean) sister, you no do me well so. You have to teach me this one yourself. I still love you though, no worry. Nice soup.๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘.

Summer Love ๐Ÿ˜Ž Suya with Zee (Zita)

Hi folks.

Here's my new found love

                       Zita Bernice Tiena.

She is a certified health coach using shapeupafrica.com as her website. African foods are her main dietary focus.

Today, courtesy of her, we shall hopefully become "Suya' gurus and the toast of summer due to our acquired BBQ skills.๐Ÿ˜‰

What is 'Suya'?
Essentially sliced meat on sticks or skewers loaded with a nutty spice and pepper mix in powdered form. Once learnt, you can always adjust your seasoning to accommodate your tastes and tolerances.

A 'Sympli' yam competition in London!!! #theyamstoryuk

Two London Chefs from

                           Kenya Coffee House and Enish Restaurant

slog it out in a 'Yam cook-off ' to prove who can best handle our much loved 'Sympli' yam products.

After watching all that, do the next best thing:

Visit either restaurant and ask for a yam dish
or visit the shops (๐Ÿ˜‰ yeah, Tescos, Morrissons, Asda or Ades Cash and Carry etc) and buy your 'Sympli' frozen yam cubes or fries to cook up a storm in your kitchen.

Big up to The Fung Bros. ..........

These gentlemen took a tour of Nigeria in  America (yup!)  and ate some #poundedyam amongst other things (๐Ÿ˜… just trying to keep #theyamstoryuk link going ..๐Ÿ˜‰)

I decided to share this because it was a really good video exploring the diversity of some #nigeriandishes from the view of a non indigene.

In this video, the brothers described 'pounded yam as really dense mashed potatoes' which is a reasonable description actually.

'Edinrin', the name of an industrious young man at work during the regular market days at Deptford High Street in London.

YAM: The story begins

Yams are eaten by Africans and Caribbeans alike with different varieties involved. It is comparable to potatoes here in the UK as a food staple but yam is more on the rugged side.

Join us for the ride as we find out why, how and where we eat yams here in the UK. You may find yourself opting for some yam cooked in your own peculiar style too. ๐Ÿ˜

A famous author, 'Chinua Achebe' in his novel 'Things fall apart', portrayed how highly valued yams are to some cultures. Check out this blog by The Kitchen Butterfly to see what I mean.

Resourceful ...#lunchnigerianstyle by DeJuTT

My friend was telling me how a #wastenot or #leftovers project became a work of art and a 'filling' meal. ๐Ÿ˜

She had Sunday roast with all its trimmings the day before and there was bean pudding known as moin moin and stewed spinach soup (efo riro) left over.

Now, adding asparagus, green beans and sweet corn from Sunday dinner and "voila!!" ๐Ÿ˜—

What's not to love in that picture ?
Healthy, low in calories, lots of fibre and that is lunch done #nigerianstyle! ๐Ÿ˜

What up peeps! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Me American? No way! Just messing with you.

I've been away for a while on holiday. Well not holiday really but attending to some necessary family engagements in Nigeria.

 I shall be sharing with you a few pictures from my trip later.

In the mean time I came across this ๐Ÿ˜Žgenius video.
It highlights
1 - the rich variety of foods from a cross section of Nigeria
2 - the adventures of intercultural interactions in a marriage relationship. Essentially, the difficulties of accepting another's food palate.
3 - and finally how it can become a fun 'discovery channel'.

That's what we are about in Fally's Food Hut. The difference is that we have spread our blanket across a wider spectrum; The whole of Africa and The Caribbean.

Let's not be strange bedfellows but engage and interact like this couple eventually did.

Maybe I can take the role played by the counsellor too ๐Ÿค’๐Ÿ’†.

'Abula' and more @Rita's Catering Service (Caterer Review)


The occasion was the wedding of Martina and Olamide last Saturday and Rita's Catering service was on hand to add colour and 'taste' to the day. ๐Ÿ˜


A wide variety of African dishes (Nigerian in particular) were available for guests to choose from.
     



So much to choose from, guests had a bit of this that and everything and ended up with plates looking like this ๐Ÿ˜…. Everything tasty or 'finger licking' as Rita would say.

 

The highlight of the day, a rarity, making it's grand entrance at the later part of the reception was 
'Abula' - yam flour swallow (in mouldable solid form) served with 'gbegiri' beans soup and 'ewedu' (corchorus olitorius) It was served piping hot having been freshly prepared on site.
A signature Yoruba dish from the couple's part of the country, Nigeria. 




Always a good way to celebrate 'a good thing'; like finding a wife ๐Ÿ˜. 
Lots of satisfied guests and newcomers to the African Food scene that day.

It was 'all good'.

รˆkรณ food market - an open secret in Charlton SE7 (Grocer Review)

You know how it is with us, we keep to tried and tested tracks only until someone assures us of something new?

Well, yesterday I decided to stop by รˆkรณ Food  Market and I was pleasantly surprised.

The shop has the set up of someone who knows what they are about, very well organised and neat.

A moderate sized shop with well packaged and presented Afro Caribbean food products, some even shop branded.

There's a cooked foods counter for your typical African/Nigerian dishes. The Romanian clerk who says his name is 'Ayodeji ๐Ÿ˜' even gave me a little taster. The food was ๐Ÿ˜‹ yum!

To make matters better, they offer weekend all you can eat buffets (๐Ÿ˜ฎ) with a dedicated seating area for it, as well as catering services on request.

So much more to say, but I will let the pictures do the rest.

One thing I know is that the lady (Jollofe brand owner) is on to a good thing and will definitely be one to watch and patronise.
